A place out of a dream but to Persepha it seemed like a nightmare from which she couldn't awakeA place to love had she love. An interesting vintage rather gothicky by HP standards Winspear is unashamedly playing with the HadesPersephone story; some allusions are obvious while others are subtle But at heart VW seems enad with exploring how this mismatched pair of myth would be eually mismatched today er today meaning the 1970s Persepha Diablo both misunderstand each other's cultural motivation she's convinced that worshipping a woman consists of being put on an untouchable pedestal whereas he's eually sure that worshiping a woman is shown through physical contact Further Diablo misjudges is jealous of Persepha's innocent relationship with her protective deceased guardian while she misinterprets is jealous of an enshrined photograph which she believes to be his lover when in fact it's his mother who died when he was young There's also the matter of Diablo believing he can rape his way into childish Persepha's affection by igniting her inner woman Uh huh Good luck with that bro 🙄 Both are guilty of trying to catch flies with vinegarbut until the last 30 pages Diablo seems unable to comprehend that a gentler gradual intro to hands on affection would've eventually awakened his frightened bride to the pleasures of sex as opposed to ripping her clothes pinning her down forcing her to accept his peen as his husbandly right Be patient use the honey dude The HONEY Not the rapey vinegar 🐝🐝But this is yet another aspect of the HadesPersephone arc Just look at the abundance of hardcore retellings of this myth Hades' aggressive push through maidenly innocence continues to fascinate even today 4 stars A good read but with caveats; the rape is pretty blatant the dark backbone of the story won't appeal to everyone Also some of Persepha's comments re Latins are a bit dated could be considered rude andor un PC

review The Devil's Darling

The Devil's DarlingD the Don her husband But Persepha didn't even know him and so the beautiful Hacienda Ruy seemed like a prisonYet Don Diabl. 20yr old Heroine is left homeless and destitute after the death of her Ward who raised her from birth after the death of her mother Her Ward was a card sharp wealthy and spoiled the Heroine but kept her away from that side of his life and kept her chaste and untainted Unknown to the Heroine a few days before his death her Ward had agreed to a marriage between her and the Hero He wanted her to have a wealthy husband who would treat her gently and kindly giving her a 'good life and future' In traditional Violet Winspear this wasn't how the story progresses Hero is 36 and of course worldly with his own demons riding his back He marries the Heroine and whisks her away to his home in Mexico where she is not the obvious choice of a wife in the eye's of his staff The story like a avalanche slowly goes downhill from here This was definitely not one of the best of VW it was lacking something I can't put my finger on It wasn't so much 'dark' as it was just outright 'depressing' I'd give it 25 stars but since that isn't possible Im giving it 3 because it is Voilet Winspear and I enjoy most of her work
